The national pandemic of 2020 suddenly meant that people could work from home. Many underwent a personal reprioritization of what matters most – with emphasis on a healthy work-life balance.
Just like most of Corporate America, in late 2021 and throughout 2022, the Great Resignation era hit many large and small window film companies throughout the country. This left many tint shops looking for new employees.
Today’s hiring landscape has changed. Below are some best practices for hiring new staff members.
Create a Culture around Employee Values
According to a study by Gartner, job seekers are more selective as to who they want to work for and are seeking a healthy work-life balance. They reportedly want deeper connections, flexibility, personal growth opportunities, opportunities for physical, financial and mental wellness and a shared purpose.
Gartner recommends creating an “Employment Value Proposition” that addresses competitive compensation, career development pathways for future employees, and a renewed emphasis on using best management practices for your team.
Give your employees a sense that you care about both their personal and professional life. Make sure your managers are taking the time to get to know their employees, asking how they are doing and inquiring about their career goals. Look for ways to train employees and give them opportunities for professional growth. (In fact, Accent Distributing offers several training and certification opportunities for window tint installers.) Meanwhile, when someone needs to pick up their children from school, be sure to be responsive to that.
Hire For Potential
According to the Harvard Business Review, businesses should look for potential and not experience. It is normal to want to replace the person who just left by looking for someone with similar characteristics, experience and traits. However, it is better to look at a candidate’s personality, whether they will fit within the culture and if they can be trained.
Look at the long-term grown of the organization and try to find personalities that are going to help drive the company forward. Anyone can be trained. The goal should be to find the right person who fits within the culture and can make a difference in the long run.
Employment Incentives for Today
As mentioned, candidates want flexibility in today’s world. Many want options to work from home, at least part of the time. Many are leaving jobs that demanded severe hours and caused burnout – and are seeking an employer who values their time and wellbeing. Several are even looking for wellness packages that include mental, physical and financial means for assistance.
Forbes reports that it’s no longer about buying a company ping-pong table or serving ice cream on a Friday afternoon. Incentives should be built to ensure employees can work comfortably – while still offering opportunities for professional growth.
Your Company’s Image Matters
Your company’s image is just important in employee recruitment as it is in recruiting customers. Studies show that employees are more interested in working for brands that they believe in. Ensuring your company has a positive image and reputation will help get the right people to walk through the door and ask for an application.
